Easy win to Boys’ High

Christchurch Boys’ High School was vastly superior on all fronts when it easily overcame Christ’s College, 22-4, in their annual rugby match at Straven Road yesterday. It was the biggest winning margin between the two schools for 10 years and the first success for Boys’ High School since 1983.

The performance of College, which probably started as favourite, belied its previously unbeaten record for the season. The team lacked cohesion and only in the last lOmin did the players show any real fire. School, which had the territorial advantage for almost the entire game, dominated the possession, ran and tackled with determination and was quick to the breakdowns.

The side scored three tries to one, the only Christ’s College points coming from a try right ori time. School deservedly led, 10-0, at half-time and 4min after the turn-around that had been extended by a further six points. Even at this point the black-and-whites cheer

squad was undaunted, however, still singing “Mighty, mighty College.” Among the best of the School forwards were the speedy flanker, Hamish Owen, and the lock, Hamish Wilkie. Of the backs, the full-back, Chris Percy, the left wing, Michael Yorston, and the first fiveeighths and captain, Dougal Ferguson, all had excellent games. Percy scored the best try of the game, going over in the comer in the first half after a fine break by Ferguson and a full-tilt run down the sideline by Yorston.

On the odd occasion he received the ball, the College centre, Jordan Scott, showed the ability to penetrate while, the first five-eighths, Hamish Redfern, kicked usefully. Brian Hutchinson was a capable No. 8. For Christchurch Boys’ High School, Chris Percy Gregory Lough and Hamish Loe scored tries. Pjercy also kicked a penalty goal and two conversions and Dougal Fej*guson kicked a dropped goal. ■ j.

The Christ’s College points came from a try by Andrew Crossland.
