School-year debate

The educational value of a four-term year Is more important than any other consideration, says the president of the School Committees’ Federation, Mrs Maureen Bamford. Mrs Bamford said the federation was pleased a modified three-term year

would be Introduced next year. She said that when the Minister of Education considered the introduction of a four-term year, educational arguments should come first. “If the debate focuses on other issues, I suggest that we are in danger of having our children’s education, particularly the

compulsory section of school life, taking a back seat to other interests,” she said.

Mrs Bamford said many people would wonder why they devoted so much time to education if factors such as tourism, seasonal work, and ski-ing were emphasised in the debate.
