Fishing deal hopes

NZPA-Reuter Rarotonga The United States hopes to finalise a tuna fishing agreement with the South Pacific island nations this week.

Mr Ed Wolfe, leader of the United States delegation in the Cook Islands for the week-long talks, said that he was "cautiously optimistic" the meeting would end the long-running dispute over the refusal of American tuna fishermen to pay for the right to fish in Island waters.

Mr Wolfe called the talks “very sensitive.”
