Butter decision deferred

NZPA staff correspondent Brussels E.E.C. Agriculture Ministers referred the question of New Zealand butter exports to their top advisers when they met in Brussels yesterday, and will not discuss the Issue until today. Even then it was by no means certain that a decision would be reached on how much butter New Zealand could sell in Europe during the next two years, officials said. A spokesman for the British delegation said he was optimistic that a “satisfactory” settlement would be reached.

The European Commission, the officials who run the Common Market, proposed on July 8 that New Zealand should be allowed to export 77,000 tonnes of butter to the Community next year, and 75,000 tonnes in 1988. The present quota of 79,000 tonnes will expire on August 1.

The commission was slow in drafting the official proposal and although it was put in front of Ministers yesterday it was decided that a special committee of senior officials should go through the details before it was debated.
