Back pay for teachers

PA Wellington The average secondary school teacher will be about $2OOO better off this week, when the Education Department parts with $3l million in back pay after the teachers’ salary settlement in May. New Zealand’s 14,000 secondary teachers will start getting their new salary rates, plus arrears dated to November 10 last year, in their pay packets tomorrow.

Teachers and principals were awarded pay increases of between 23 and 35 per cent by the Public Sector Tribunal, taking teachers at the top of the basic scale — about 70 per cent of the profession —- to $34,156 a year.
