Plunket move on cot deaths

Christchurch will have two more Plunket nurses this winter, to try to help keep down the city’s high cot-death rate. The Plunket Society Christchurch area nursing adviser, Mrs Ellenor Mayo, said yesterday that having more nurses meant babies would be visited regularly uiitil they were three months old, rather than six weeks old.

Mrs Mayo said a study in Sheffield had shown that increased supervision of young babies lowered the rate of cot deaths. Nobody knew exactly why this was, she said.

The increased staffing for Christchurch had been approved because the lower half of the South Island was a bad area for cot deaths, she said. She did not know if staffing increases also had been approved for other southern areas.
