Major Drive set for Trentham

By

J. J. Boyle

Major Drive, a stoutly-bred four-year-old from the Central Districts which is entered for the $1 million Foster’s Melbourne Cup, looks likely material for the $20,000 Parliamentary Handicap at Trentham today.

A scion of a family that came up 'with some versatile winter performers including Brockton and the Winter Cup winner Biassed, Major Drive runs for the Foxton stable of Dave Enright. Purple Crown won for the Enright stable on the first day of the Wellington meeting. His younger stablemate goes into today’s feature flat race, as a last-start winner at Hastings, that followed two thirds and a fourth.

Major Drive won the Hawke’s Bay club’s 2200 m race in the style of a real stayer. Such a show of stamina could only be expected of a horse whose sire Sea Anchor won beyond two miles, and whose dam and granddam were sired respectively by Sucaryl and Agricola. Major Drive has 53kg in the Parliamentary, placing him midway in one of the most compressed handicaps in the history of an historic winter race.

Timandra Bay, top weight with 55kg, was one of six Parliamentary acceptors to race on the first day of the meeting, and his Whyte Handicap

fourth might be considered the best of the leadup runs.

That performance was evidence of good progress since his win in the Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslie on June 7.

Chief Joseph put a second into his record on the first day, but his placing was in a highweight, and it was a distant second at that.

Vincere, another on 53kg, has today’s race as part of his buildup for the Wellington Hurdles on the final day of the meeting, but the exercise could still be a rewarding one. This rising nine-year-old won the Wellington Handicap on a heavy track at Trentham last October, and his campaign this winter has been distinguished by the ease with which he beat a good field of hurdlers at the Manawatu winter meeting.

The Trentham-trained Laceration, as winner of three of his last four races, will go into his first class 1 race with strong local backing. Becks, Graikos, and Sandeeno are South Island hopefuls. Beks and Graikos have wins close up on their records. Sandeeno has not

earned a trip north with his latest runs but his connections could have regarded a return visit attractive after the King’s Palace gelding’s two placed runs at Trentham a year ago, one of them a third in Greek Meer’s Parliamentary. Orkahn, from the Bulls stable of Mervyn Andrews, is likely to establish the pattern of the race early. He likes to run in front, and has shown tenacity as well to contribute minor placings in his recent starts. Allowed his own rules until close to home, he could pose problems for the others.

Gatcome’s Pride has shown a touch of class in winning three races from as many starts, and will be a dominating favourite for the Petone Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double.

The Petone Handicap is also the second leg of the T.A.B. treble.

Lord Jekyll looks a likely prospect for the first leg of the treble, the Seatoun Handicap, and Doc’s Dream, also from Stratford, should go close to winning the Totara Handicap, third leg of the treble.
