Rain unexpected

The persistent, heavy rain throughout most of the central South Island over the last two days took the Christchurch Weather Office by surprise. A meteorologist, Mr Roger Ridley, said yesterday that the rain had been expected to clear on Sunday afternoon, “On Saturday, a frontal system crossing the Tasman Sea was expected to weaken as it arrived in the South Island,” he said. “It did not weaken or move towards the - east coast of the North Island

as we thought it would.” The slow-moving depression ended much closer to the central South Island, he said. In the 24 hours to 9 a.m. yesterday 75mm of rain-fell in Christchurch, and 57 mm at Christchurch Airport Between 6 a.m. and 12 noon yesterday 26.5 mm of rain was recorded at the airport. Rain is expected to continue in Christchurch at least until this evening, and heavy rain is forecast for Banks Peninsula and South Canterbury.
