Punjab toll
The militant campaign for an independent Sikh nation in the Punjab has claimed 427 lives so far this year, Including 111 in June and 29 this month, The Press Trust of India reports. The latest official figures show that the violence is intensifying. Thirty-one died in January, 28 in February, 86 in March, 56 in April, and 86 in May. A tally of death reports from security forces showed that 75 people had died since June 19, as the authorities tried to clamp down on violence and separatists stepped up their attacks.—New Delhi.
