Record day for A.A.

Calls for help from motorists to the Automobile Association (Canterbury) yesterday were a record, and at times there was a call every three minutes.

Between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. the A.A. responded to, 287 calls. Until yesterday the most cans to the A.A. in a day to 11 p.m. were 228 in March, 1979.

An A.A. spokesman said that most problems with vehicles were caused by dampness, either from; the■frjiifaf or from water getting Into engines after drivers tried to negotiate floodwater. There were also flat batteries, and some signs of poor maintenance.

Extra A.A. staff were out on the roads and on duty in the busy control room. Officers who usually maintain signposts helped the towing service.
