Quality of teachers
Sir,—Ted Muicock (July 3) refers to teachers who “use the classroom for political propaganda.” During long service I have never seen busy teachers attempt this. College advice was, “avoid politics and religion” (or have half the parents cheering and others booing). For State schools this is immoral as pupils are compulsorily attending. Investigation could begin with Ted’s complaint in writing to his committee. “Character training” used to be at the head of every scheme of work. The N.Z.E.I. has its code of ethics and busy teachers progressively grapple with road safety, Maori language, water safety, sex enlightenment, violence, television, peace, home care, metrics, corporal punishment, alcoholism and smoking. The syllabus says that “pupils should make informed judgments on a rapidly changing world.” Can adults do this? Dereliction of duty for secret private football warrants attention.—Yours, etc., H. J. HART. < Runanga, July 4, 1986.
