Blyme should confirm worth at Timaru
By ALEX McMILLAN The Palatable six-year-old, Blyme, should confirm the worth of an impressive 1600 m win at Oamaru last month by taking out the 2100 m Timaru Police Centennial Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Timaru Racing Club’s meeting at Washdyke today. Blyme’s win at Oamaru was achieved with ridiculous ease, the entire gathering in the leaders with the minimum of effort before being allowed to coast over the final metres by his rider, John Dowling. The additional 500 m of today’s contest should not
pose any problem and his ability to cope with any type of going will almost certainly guarantee him favouritism.
Buffy Beaufort, to be ridden by Chris Johnson, has been unable to add to her tally of career wins this season but her most recent efforts suggest that she could be close to regaining her best form. The five-year-old finished with purpose for her fifth placing at Ashburton and today’s distance should suit.
The likelihood of true winter footing today will enhance the prospects of Graikos, Soaring High and Young Nick, while Giveaway, a disappointing 11th
at Ashburton, is unlikely to be inconvenienced by any further deterioriation in conditions.
Giveaway is one of a book of seven confirmed rides today for the contry’s leading rider, Lance O’Sullivan, who is still six wins short of equalling David Walsh’s record of 138 wins in one season, established last term. O’Sullivan, who failed to ride a winner at either Wanganui or Te Rapa during the week, will also ride Yoz, Devery, Mount Pleasant, Blarney Fair, Windvale Harbour and Appear today on what will be his final visit to a South Island meeting this season.
