Rugby Union ‘divided’
PA Wellington The 19 New Zealand Rugby Union councillors are “heavily divided” over the fate of the 31 Cavaliers who toured South Africa, according to the editor of “Rugby News,” Mr Bob Howitt. Some of the councillors, who will reassemble in Wellington on July 11, are calling for a life ban on the rebels, Mr Howitt says in this week’s rugby paper.
“Others believe that by missing last Saturday’s
test against France the players have suffered sufficient penalty already,” he said. “Because of legal ramifications — and the N.Z.R.U. is being advised every step of the way by its lawyers — it is conceivable no decision will be reached for many weeks yet.
“This means the All Black selectors may have to choose their test team to meet Australia before the Cavaliers investigation is resolved,” Mr Howitt
said. The Cavaliers face two charges. The first is that the players went overseas without permission. The second is a possible breach of the International Rugby Board’s amateur laws. They also failed to return forms sent them by the N.Z.R.U. and could also be guilty of misconduct. The forms sent to the Cavaliers were much more comprehensive than normally completed by players going overseas.
