Air N.Z. jumbos ‘not affected’

PA Wellington Air New Zealand is not affected by American Federal Aviation Administration proposals for checks on Boeing 747 jumbo jets after the discovery of cracks in fuselage frames. Boeing alerted users of its jumbos in February to cracks in airframes of older models. An Air New Zealand spokesman, Mr Bob Wallace, repeated the airline’s statement yesterday that the five 747 s in its fleet were not old enough to be affected, but the recommended inspections would be made as part of normal maintenance.

The F.A.A. has proposed that all 160 Boeing 747 s flying in the United States be inspected. There are more than 600 of the giant jets in service. -

An F.A.A. spokesman said there was no immediate danger. Checks for cracks, page 10
