Society facts needed: seminar

More facts are needed about rural society, and a study group should be set up, a seminar at Lincoln College decided yesterday.

The seminar was attended by about 35 scientists, sociologists, economists, historians, farmers, and others with an interest in rural society. A research sociologist at Lincoln College, Mr John Fairweather, said the seminar felt that a study group should try to develop good theoretical approaches to rural research and involve rural people in the process.

He said that the next step would be to publish the proceedings of the seminar and circulate it to interested people. The seminar was supported financially by the National Research Advisory Council, and was attended by people from Auckland, Palmerston North, Hamilton, Christchurch and Dunedin, as well as people from rural areas.
