White makes most of opportunities

It may well have been Grant White's good fortune that the All Blacks prepared for their test against the French with a training nin at Burnham Camp last Thursday. The Country pack was called in to provide the All Blacks with a scrummaging rival, and White, as he has been all season, was the No. 8. Subsequent events would suggest that White did not go unnoticed by the All Black selectors, despite all the things they had on their minds. On Monday they asked for him to play in the final trial at Lincoln College before the Colts side was named. White had previously been nominated for the two-day coaching school at the college, but had not been chosen. And nor were two of the other three Canterbury players who won places in the side. Stephen Bachop was among the 60 who stayed at the college,
but Stuart Loe and Shayne Philpott were both among the eight “extras,” who were invited to go out each day. Loe, too, was in the Country scrum which packed down against the All Blacks at Bumham in the cold and rain last Thursday, and the outing may have helped his cause as well. Loe is a cousin of Rich-
ard Loe, who played a couple of games for Canterbury in 1980 before winning selection for the New Zealand Juniors from Marlborough in 1982 and last year he toured with the New Zealand Emerging Players side. Both men are props. Richard Loe is the son of Gordon Loe and Stuart’s father is Frank, both well-known North Canterbury sporting figures. The Loe brothers actually married sisters, Beverly and Barbara Wyllie, who have a younger brother by the name of Alex. Yesterday Stuart Loe was described as a member of the Glenmark club. He grew up with this club, but at present he is living and working in Hawarden and playing for the United club. White is a man who keeps on the move. He lives in Christchurch, is a part-time student at Lincoln College and works on a farm in Culverden, where he plays his rugby. He comes from Wairarapa.
