Mariner enjoys stay
PA Auckland His World Cup commentaries completed, the former England soccer international, Paul Mariner, leaves for Hawaii this evening with his wife, Ali, and sons, Dan and Joe, for a week’s holiday. Mariner will then be on the lookout for a club for the new season. “There are two or three offers to consider,” he said yesterday. "That is the most pressing thing for me to do when I get back home.
"One of the clubs has its players in to start preseason training on July 16, so there won’t be much time. “We have loved it here. I knew we would after what I saw when I was last here in 1979. We have been made really welcome and the chance to work so closely with the World Cup was a real bonus.” Asked about those early morning starts on television, he said: “Only on the odd morning did I curse the alarm, but once I was up it was okay.”
