Canty fencers winning return
Alan Bunn, a 30-year-old high school teacher, re-emerged on the Canterbury fencing scene at an open tournament last week-end. After winning the epee section without losing any of his five bouts in the final, Bunn finished fourth in the foil event with performances which belied his 18-month absence from completition. The tournament was a warm-up for this weekend’s South Island championships in Christchurch, and the absence of the two top-seeded foillsts, Steven Clarke and Patrick Kell,. gave others the chance for high placings. In a close final, David Metcalfe was victorious after a three-way barrage
with Robert Bain and ) Paul Wilson. Also notable was the performance of Isabelle Perkins, the only female finalist The award for the youngest finalist was won by Andrew Kell, aged 14.
