Councillors dissatisfied
PA Wellington Two Labour Porirua City councillors say they may stand as Independents in the local body elections because of “general disatisfaction’’ with the party. They are among four long-serving Labour councillors whose names were missing from the recently announced party ticket The four are Messrs Eric McKenzie and Tom Janes and Mesdames Sandra Meredith and Margaret Brown. They had not put their names forward, said Labour’s local body committee chairman, Mr Ross Kelly. All four have been Labour councillors since the 1970 s and early 1980 s. Mrs Brown and Mr
Janes said that they were considering .becoming members of an independent team. Mrs Brown said she had decided not to be part of the Labour ticket because of misgivings about the Labour team in Porirua. Mr Janes said he was dissatisfied with the Labour Party as a whole. Porirua had- not had effective leadership, he said. Since a Labour Government had been in power, the Labour dominated council had been reluctant to criticise anything the Government did in Porirua, he said. He cited delays in building a courthouse, and the scrapping of the project employment programme as examples.
