Brigadier William Hildreth
PA Wellington Brigadier William Joseph Allan Hildreth, of the Salvation Army, has died in Wellington. He was 95. The son of a pioneer officer in New Zealand who was imprisoned for preaching the Gospel on the streets, Brigadier Hildreth held many im-
portant posts during his 42 years of active service. He spent 12 years teaching in the army’s schools. Young people’s work was his special interest and at one time he was second-in-command at the Salvation Army training college under the direction of the late General Osborne.
He and his wife, the late Isabella Mary Hildreth, spent 10 years managing the People’s Palace in Wellington, later called the Railton Hotel. It has now been closed. Brigadier Hildreth finally completed active service as trade secretary for the Salvation Army in New Zealand.
