Orchestra’s S.I. tour
The University of Canterbury String Orchestra begins a four concert tour of South Island towns on ■Tuesday. The orchestra of 12 players, two soloists, and a conductor have been working towards the tour for most of the year. The 12 players are advanced students at the university and are members of the University Chamber Orchestra. The soloists are music lecturers Maurice Till and Jan Tawroszewicz. The conductor is John Pattlnson, from the university’s Department of Extension Studies. The orchestra will perform at evening concerts in Oamaru (July 8), Waimate (July 9), Timaru (July 10) and Ashburton (July 12). It will also give school concerts in Waimate, Timaru and Ashburton. This is the first time the orchestra has played such a tour and Mr Till hopes that it will be the first of
several regular tours, even covering a wider area. The orchestra will give a Christchurch performance in the James Hay Theatre in September. Mr Till said a small number of musicians were chosen to maintain the high level of playing and for travelling. He said the orchestra had achieved a high standard.
