Trucking firms sexist—woman
PA Tauranga Trucking firms are sexist, says an angry truckdriver, Olive Knight. She claims Tauranga firms will not give her a job because she is a woman. So she decided to take the' matter to the Drivers’ Union and Labour Department. Ms Knight, aged 46, gained her heavy traffic licence two years ago and after trying 15 firms is almost despairing of getting a trucking job. . “I don’t believe in women’s lib and all that,” she said. “But I do believe in giving a woman a
chance. “These firms ' are discriminating against me because I am a woman.” She said one firm told her the job was too hard physically for a woman and she had heard “through the grapevine” that she had lost other job opportunities because she was a woman. But Ms Knight said there were trucking jobs available which consisted of simply carting dirt, metal or sand to various destinations. Originally from England, Ms Knight has four children and came to Tauranga 33 years ago.
