School protests
Sir, —After reading Mr Mulcock’s letter (June 27), I am quite satisfied that my involvement in the protest regarding Warwick Taylor’s reinstatement at Bumside High School was justified. I am puzzled as to how someone who professes to abhor apartheid can consider the Afrikaner Government as a responsible governing power. Surely, this is a contradiction in terms. These so-called “exemplary” sportsmen who were bought by the South African Government deserve a much more severe penalty than simply losing their job, and I certainly do not think they should be allowed to continue in a profession as influential to young people as teaching. The main issue regarding Warwick Taylor’s return to teaching, however, is his absence without leave. If Mr Taylor retains his job, surely he is being shown special treatment. I am sure no other teacher or Government
employee could simply be absent after being denied leave and not suffer any consequences. — Yours, etc.,
CATHRYN HUGHES. June 27, 1986.
