Results of growth
Sir, —What bitter irony is inherent in the alarm expressed recently by Labour Cabinet Ministers about the potential disaster from a global “greenhouse effect.” In the 1970 s the Values Party campaigned vigorously against thoughtless industrial growth, and wasteful use of energy and resources. Electorally, it was ignored. Now, almost too late, the results of commitment to "growth” are becoming obvious. The likelihood of temperature change through a greenhouse effect is but one instance. In Europe people have been irradiated by a nuclear accident; immense areas will never again see a living tree because of acid rain, and the waterways are horribly polluted. In New Zealand “think big” proves to be an economic disaster. In Christchurch we suffer as much as ever from lead and other air pollutants. When will we learn that “growth” , does not mean a better standard of living? Is it already too late? — Yours, etc.,
