South Africa
Sir, —The central core of Bert; Walker’s apologia for South African racism (June 28), after a! recitation of minor cosmetic changes that in not the slightest degree can beautify the ugly features of apartheid, is contained in his sentence: “Coexistence is possible but cannot be ; achieved by outside pressure or unreasonable demands for black majority rule.” In plain language, “coexistence” is possible only on the same racist terms that prevail today. As far as Bert Walker is concerned, one would hazard the guess that there are no “reasonable” demands for black majority rule. Democracy is universally understood, at its most elementary, as majority rule, elected by one man one vote. Democracy hedged around with reservations about the skin colour of the majority is pure racism and the very negation of democracy. — Yours, etc.,
M. CREEL. June 28, 1986.
