Geldof wed?

NZPA-PA London Wedding rumours yesterday surrounded the Live Aid pop star, Bob Geldof, and his longstanding lover, Paula Yates. Reports in most Sunday newspapers — the most detailed in the “News of the World” — said Geldof, aged 32, the fund-raiser and knight, married Miss Yates, aged 26, a television presenter, in a quick wedding in Las Vegas. This was denied by Miss Yates, who hosts Channel Four’s pop show “The Tube,” in several morning papers. The report in “News of the World” quoted the Minister and staff at the “Little Church in the West” — which specialises in the instant marriages allowed under Nevada state law — as con-

firming the wedding. The chapel’s director, Ms Brenda Hammon, said that the ceremony in the 40-year-old church cost SUS4S ($83.25) with SUS 79 ($146) on top for a video of it.

The chapel’s manager, Mr Greg Smith, said Geldof rang up to make arrangements a couple of days before and it was not until he turned up for the ceremony that they realised who he was. “News of the World” said that the ceremony took 10 minutes, Geldof was smartly dressed and the couple’s daughter, Fifi Trixiebelle, aged 3, was a bridesmaid. It said that the marriage was a spur-of-the-moment decision after they arrived in Las Vegas to watch Barry McGuigan’s world featherweight title fight.
