Protest over ‘eyesore’
Residents of Eastern Terrace are angry about what they consider to be an eyesore just across the Heathcote River. Behind the Centaurus Village shopping centre is an area of undeveloped land, backing on to the river. The area has been sprayed with weedkiller, and is littered with broken concrete and rubbish. A resident, Mrs Suzanne Edgington, said neighbours in Eastern Terrace were sick of looking at a river bank that “looked like the Christchurch tip.” Mrs Edgington said she had telephoned the owners of the land, Industrial but had failed to g£t an agreement to tidy, the
land. Another resident of Eastern Terrace, Mr Robert Shackle, rang the firm yesterday. He was told the land was going to be developed. “I said, ‘Why don’t you develop it then*?” he said. “It’s just an eyesore.”
Mrs Edgington said the river bank had been in an untidy state for about three years, and residents were sick of having to put up with it A spokesman for Industrial Holdings, who did not want to be named, said the land was going to be developed, but there was a legal delay. Until that was settled, the company could not do anything.
