Compact discs for hire soon

Compact discs will be available for hire from the Canterbury Public Library in the next few months. About 50 discs will be available at a fee of $1.50 for two weeks hire.

The City Librarian, Mr John Stringleman, said yesterday it would take a few months to buy and process the discs, some of which will be imported. Discs with music ranging from rock to classical will be bought. Mr Stringleman said that because discs were played by laser and not by a needle they were capable of any number of playings without the sound being distorted.

The hire fee will be reviewed after six months and more discs will be bought when supply and demand allows.
