Bridle Path condition a disgrace—claim
The condition of the Bridle Path is a "utter disgrace,” according to the founder and vicepresident of the Summit Road Society, Mr John Jameson. He has called for a conference of groups involved with the path.
“These groups include the Lyttelton Borough and Heathcote County Councils, the local committee of the Walkways Commission, the Canterbury Pilgrims and Early Settlers’ Association, the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, and my’ society,?. Mr Jameson said.
“We have already written to some of these groups asking them to exercise greater control over the path. “This is Canterbury’s most historic path which the early pilgrims used to reach Christchurch, and yet no-one seems to want to take responsibility for it. Unless it is declared a historic walkway and sealed off from all but authorised traffic it. will continue to be damaged by trail bikes and will not regain its natural drainage.”
The society’s committee recently decided to allocate $2OOO towards a roof for the shelter at Jolies Bush scenic reserve, along the Summit Road from Evans Pass Road. “We have also authorised the use of $7OO of Heathcote County Council grant money to erect a new fence at Scotts Reserve over the Bowenvale and Mount Vernon areas where tree planting has been done. “At Rapanui Reserve one of the society’s groups has been clearing noxious plants in preparation for the extension of the historic Captain Thomas track.”
Another group has been building new tracks to an historic quarry in Kennedy’s Bush Reserve, he said. Trial move
