‘Elephants’ for Australia
The Union Shipping Group will ship a herd Of elephants to Australia next month.
The life-sized elephants are works of art created by an Auckland sculptor, Mr Jeff Thomson. They will be exhibited in Sydney, Brisbane, and Adelaide and probably some other centres as well.
The elephants collapse into flat sheets of corrugated iron and will be shipped in a standard T.E.U. container.
Mr Thomson, a former secondary school art teacher and now a professional artist, is probably best-known for his multi-coloured corrugated iron animals. The animals were exhibited in Auckland and Wellington earlier this year. The elephant "herd” then numbered 13, but has since risen to 25. Mr Thomson.said that he got the idea when a farming friend asked him to make a corrugated iron cow to sit on his letter box. Since then, orders for the corrugated iron animals had “poured in.” ARRIVALS Coastal Trader (7 a.m.), 6736, Auckland (N.Z.S.A.). Tarihiko (7.30 a.m.), 1511, New Plymouth (N.Z.S.A.).
