Interest in new flag
PA Auckland A green koru designed by a Northland artist, Friedrich Huntertwasser, is receiving endorsement from polititicians and the public as a new national flag. The proposal from the Bay of Islands artist is on display at Auckland City Art Gallery and has been presented to members of Parliament, 25
of whom supported it. The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, the Minister of Education, Mr Marshall, and the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Tapsell, whose department is responsible for the flag, have approved the new design. An informal survey at the gallery has shown public support. “It is time we had a
flag which was genuinely and indigenously New Zealand, which couldn’t be mistaken,” said the Vienna-born artist, whose New Zealand life and work have earned him an international reputation. The flag consists of the unfurling fern or koru in the natural green of New Zealand bush on a background of long white cloud.
