Mrs Wood may be candidate
PA Auckland The retiring National Party president, Mrs Sue Wood, said yesterday that she was considering seeking nomination for the National-held seat of Matamata. Mrs Wood, aged 37, has twice unsuccessfully contested the Auckland seat of Onehunga. Party officials in the rural electorate believe as many as 22 aspirants may be nominated for the seat by the closing date of July 7.
“I have been approached to stand for selection,” said Mrs Wood, who will stand down as party president early in
August. “I visited the electorate this week-end and after speaking with some of the senior officials I am seriously looking at the possibility. “Family circumstances have changed, and I am now in a position to respond to approaches.” Mrs Wood, who is helping to prepare for the party’s fiftieth conference in Auckland in August, said a nomination would not affect her obligations as president. It would be possible to continue with her presidential duties as well as campaigning for support in Matamata, she said.
