Shipping news Fishing vessel safety
The Marine Division has urged the skippers of fishing vessels and small craft to ensure an efficient watch is maintained from the bridge. The division, in a marine notice, asks owners and skippers of vessels to have an experienced and competent man in charge of the bridge at all times. Crew members asked to "look out” should also have plenty of rest before taking charge, said the division. Such precautions were important for the safety of the vessel and other craft nearby. Investigations into strandings and collisions involving fishing vessels had found that at times uncertified men were left in charge of a bridge. The importance of safe navigation was self-evident, and should be given top priority, the division said. ARRIVALS Coastal Trader (7 a.m.), 6736, Auckland (N.Z.5.A.1.L.).
