Lebanon frees hostages

NZPA Nicosia Four foreign hostages held in Lebanon have been freed in the last three days, the largest group of captives released since Muslim extremists began kidnapping foreigners in January, 1984.

In spite of pledges by Syria, the main powerbroker in Lebanon, to help secure the release of 17 other foreigners ab-

ducted by Beirut gunmen, there was no sign that five American hostages were close to being released by their captors, Shi’ite Muslim extremists.

Two French television crewmen, Philippe Rochot, aged 39, and Georges Hansen, aged 45, were freed on Friday night by Shi’ite extremists after intensive negotiations involving French, Syrian and Iranian

officials. Two Cypriot engineering students, Stavros Yannakl, aged 23, and Panayiotis Tirkas, aged 24, were also freed, nearly two months after they were grabbed in Beirut It has not been determined who held them or why.

More than 50 foreigners, mostly Westerners, have been kidnapped by Lebanese factions in the last two and a half years.
