Tourism boon for Fiji

From LES BLOXHAM in Fiji Fiji in the next few months could cash in on the effect terrorism has had on American tourists, a senior American airline executive said in Fiji yesterday. Mr Paul Casey, a Con-

tinental Airline marketing executive, said America’s fear of crossing the Atlantic had had a catastrophic effect on traditionally popular European tourit destinations.

“But they are looking for new and safe places to go and the future has never been brighter for the Pacific Islands,” he told delegates attending the twenty-fifth annual Fiji tourism convention. Hawaii was already benefiting from the trend and it was now difficult to get accommodation there. Mr Casey said Fiji could also effect a big increase in American visitors in the months ahead, but he urged the Government to increase its promotional budget of $200,000 to a more realistic level.
