Deer prices continue to strengthen
Deer prices at an auction in Christchurch yesterday continued to strengthen in line with recent sales in other parts of New Zealand.
Top-quality red weaner hinds made $l2OO to $l4OO, probably the highest auction prices for red weaners since late last year. The yarding of about 370 females, mostly red deer, was of generally good quality. Buyers showed a strong preference for stock with good breeding background and high body weights, and only a handful of deer (mostly light stock) were passed in. The top weaner price of $l4OO was paid for 15 deer with average body weights of 59.6 kg to 61kg from Heatherlea Deer Farm, Hororata, and for five deer (60kg) from H. van Hoppe, Hamilton. Weaners of 54kg to 58kg generally made $lOOO to $l2OO and 44kg to 50kg weaners were $7OO to $9OO. Five 18-month red hinds (106.5 kg from C. J. and P. G. Jowers, Ashburton, sold at $2550 and a line of red hinds mated with an imported German stag reached $2050 for Peak Hill Partnership, of Lake Coleridge. Sales included:
