Mr Robertshaw re-elected for a fourth term
Mr Dewar Robertshaw, of Auckland, will have a fourth term as president of the Trotting Conference.
Mr Robertshaw had a landslide victory of 43 to 14 votes over his challenger, the former North Island vice-president of the conference, Mr Charlie Elliott, of Morrinsville.
Mr Geoff Elliott, of Hamilton, topped the poll among four candidates for
three North Island seats on the executive. He polled 53 votes, with 48 for Dr lan McKay, of Palmerston North, and 34 for Mr Ken Verran, of Thames. The unsuccessful candidate was Mr Barney Reilly, of Cambridge, who received 30 votes. The third North Island vacancy resulted from the unopposed election of Mr Ron Hanford, of Auckland, to the position of
North Island vice-presi-dent left vacant by Mr Elliott’s quest for the presidency.
Mr Elliott’s defeat ends a 15-year term on the executive, the last 10 of which he spent in the position of North Island vice-president.
Mr Elliott announced his intention of seeking the presidency towards the end of March, almost two months before nominations closed. At the
time his chances were highly rated. In April he travelled south and had wide-rang-ing discussions with officials, and groups in Southland. His criticism of the Racing Authority and other aspects of trotting administration, were, to say the least, received coolly and they were generally considered as political suicide, a fact confirmed by the voting for Mr Robertshaw.
