O’Sullivan, Davison hope to boost totals today

By

J. J. BOYLE

The leading jockey, Lance O’Sullivan, returns to the South Island to ride at today’s Ashburton meeting hoping to build on an impressive total of 128 for the season.

He is trailing David Walsh’s record for a season by 10 wins and will be looking to his lineup of mounts today to edge closer.

At least he cannot fare worse than David Walsh did when he included last year’s Ashburton winter meeting on his list. Walsh remained scoreless after eight rides, including four on favourites. But when Walsh returned for the Timaru meeting 10 days later he landed a hattrick, on Proud Leigh, Sound Note, and Jonny Alone.

Proud Leigh and Jonny Alone will be in the action at Ashburton today, Proud Leigh as a ’chaser with a chance in the first leg of the T.A.B. treble, and Jonny Alone as one of the stronger chances in the Jim Pankhurst Farewell, first leg of the T.A.B. double and the T.A.B. trifecta event.

Famillion will be the O’Sullivan mount in the Pankhurst Farewell. The four-year-old has a good record on the Ashburton course and represents the strongest threat to the big guns in the top half of the handicap today.

Devery, a stablemate of Famillion, will be the first on O’Sullivan’s list of rides today.

Other O’Sullivan mounts include the Wingatuitrained Hwyl in the Bayer Rintal Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double and third leg of the treble.

Hwyl has shown a fair talent on winter tracks, and shaped as if he is on the path towards winning form when placed at the Eastern Southland Hunt meeting on June 10.

Betting on the Bayer should reflect a wide range of fancies. They include Pantless, Graikos, Young Nick, and the stablemates Beks and Giveaway.

Lance O’Sullivan’s mounts in the last two races on the card are the Riccarton pair, Stylish Living and Gums a Calling.

Their failures to reach the money at the Timaru meeting on June 6 were costly, but O’Sullivan must have thought Stylish Living had shown enough in finishing fifth to extend a partnership with the Star Way filly. The quest of Grant Davison for another win to give him his century for the season will also lend much interest to today’s meeting. Davison has an early form runner in Bijou Lady (Methven Hotel Maiden), will be on Jonny Alone in the Pankhurst Farewell, and will hope to extend a rewarding partnership with Polacca in the Burnetts Handicap. Polacca has won his last two races in the style of a horse capable of making the step up to 1600 m without much trouble.
