Mating of minds catches on

NZPA-Reuter Sinapore Government matchmakers said yesterday that their scheme to increase Singapore’s brain power by getting more graduate women to marry and breed children is taking off after a hesitant start.

A match-maker, Eileen Aw, said 250 graduates had met their mates at Government - organised tea-dances, cruises, and picnics since the scheme started in 1984.

Most Singaporeans thought the Government’s attempt to play cupid was a flop after it produced only a handful of marriages at first.

Ms Aw said that after widespread publicity about the scheme, inspired by the Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kwan Yew, the number of graduate men marrying graduate women was higher than in 1983.

About 7000 people had joined the Government’s Social Development Unit to find partners, compared with 4500 at the start.
