Meat “radiation-free”
PA Wellington New Zealand has assured overseas buyers that radiation from the Chernobyl nuclear accident has had no effect on its meat. A Health Department statement prepared by the National Radiation Laboratory had been sent to countries seeking certification of New Zealand meat, said the assistant director of the Ministry of Agriculture’s Meat Divi-
sion, Mr Andrew McKenzie. The Ministry hoped to avoid an expensive car-case-canning programme by sending the assurance that radiation levels in New Zealand were "ultra low.” “If our staff is affected, then everybody’s is,” said Mr McKenzie. Requests had come from the United States food safety inspection service, Austria, Morocco
and other countries. The Health Department statement described contamination levels in New Zealand as insignificant, and said monitoring of foodstuffs was not warranted. Fall-out was at its lowest level since monitoring began in 1960, and “no change in environmental contamination levels has been recorded in New Zealand during 1986,” said the statement.
