Poland favoured

PA Wellington The Government has decided to give Poland the benefits of New Zealand’s generalised system of preferences from July 1. The Minister of Customs, Mrs Shields, said this would enable Polish goods to enter New Zea-

land at the same tariff rate as those from less developed countries. Although there is no precise criteria for determining worthiness for less-developed country treatment, only countries with a gross national product of less than 70 per cent of New Zealand’s are eligible for the scheme.

“Poland is well below this threshold,” said Mrs Shields.

“Under New Zealand’s system, duty-free access or margins of preference are accorded on a wide range of goods which originate in less developed countries.”
