Three racing cyclists hurt

PA Timaru Three road racing cyclists were seriously injured near Temuka yesterday when they were in collision with a car. Mark Fletcher and Paul Withnall, of Dunedin, and Wayne McLennan, of Invercargill, were taken to Timaru hospital. McLennan was reported in a serious condition last evening with head, facial and chest injuries and multiple lacerations, as was Fletcher, with head injuries and multiple lacerations. Withnall was reported in a satisfactory condition. The president of the Timaru Amateur Cycling Club, Mr Grant Hannam, said the injured competitors were break riders in a bunch of 30 when the accident happened, at 2 p.m. They were taking part in the Alan Loach memorial road race over 80km and were on the last lap. The “Timaru Herald” believed several other riders suffered minor injuries but the driver of the car was not hurt.
