Cross-country wins
Phil Clode and Mary O’Connor both had comfortable wins in the Holloway Memorial cross-country races at McLeans Island on Saturday.
Racing over 16km, Clode, the Canterbury 1500 m track champion, finished nearly a minute clear of the next runner, Grant Hardy. O’Connor, having one of her last races before leaving for the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games, won the women’s event over Bkm by 21s from Ann-Marie Tweedie.
Competitors had to contend with strong winds.
Senior men: P. Clode (University), 54min 475, 1; G. Hardy (Bascik New Brighton), 55:44, 2; S. Watts (St Martins), 56:21, 3; D. Macdonald (Olympic), 56:33, 4. First veteran: B. Atkins (United), 59:19, 11 overall. First aged over 50: S. Pavett (University), 63:28.
Senior women: M. O'Connor (University), 30:34, 1; A. Tweedie (University), 30:55, 2; P. Daly (Cashmere), 32:31, 3; K. Clarridge (Bascik New Brighton), 33:19, 4. First veteran: H. Grant (Sumner), 34:14, 7 overall. First over 45: J. Miles (Olympic), 36:33.
