Migration loss of 21,600
Wellington reporter
More than 57,000 New Zealanders either emigrated or left the country for long stays overseas last year, according to the Statistics Department. This, compared with only 36,000 immigrants, produced a net loss of 21,600 , people, almost three times higher than last year’s 8100 loss. „ Of the 21,600 lost through permanent and long-term migration, 2300 were professional, technical and related workers; 4000 were clerical workers; and 7500 were production workers, drivers, or labourers. The Deputy Leader of the Democratic Party, Mr Neil Morrison, said the exodus of people “escaping” New Zealand could be matched only by Vietnam, Cuba and East Germany, reports NZPA. He said the average New Zealander could not share in the profits of the Government’s free-market policies. People leaving their own land was the ultimate vote of no-confid-ence.
