‘French’ jail a possibility for agents
PA Wellington The solution to the Rainbow Warrior dispute could involve imprisonment of the convicted French agents in a “manifestly French” location, said the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, yesterday. During an interview on Radio New Zealand, Mr Lange said there was a quality to French nationalism which had regard to the place where people were confined It would be “politically sustainable” for the convicted agents, Alain Mafart and Dominique
Prieur, to be confined in a place which was manifestly French. “That may be the political solution,” Mr Lange said. The Government is still considering terms of reference to be put to France for independent arbitration. The United Nations Secretary-General, Mr Javier Perez de Cuellar, has agreed to act as arbitrator once the French and New Zealand Governments finalise terms of reference.
