Pilot forced to fly upside down
PA Wanganui Emergency services swung into full scale alert at Wanganui Airport yesterday as a malfunctioning light aircraft flew upside down above the airport. Two fire engines, a fire rescue vehicle, an ambulance and Ministry of Transport and police cars sped to the airport about 2 p.m. At one stage it was thought the light aircraft would have to be ditched in the sea off the Wanganui coast. The Wanganui coastguard jet boat was launched and the rescue crew was ready for action, but they were not needed, police said. The pilot and sole occupant was in radio contact with the airport control tower throughout the 12minute drama. The pilot succeeded in correcting the fauw with
the flaps and was able to make a safe landing at the airport without injury to himself or damage to his aircraft. Senior-Sergeant Nigel Mcßae said there were real fears that the aircraft would crash after a malfunction occurred while the plane was airborne.
