AUSTRALIA Markets close firmer
NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed generally firmer, reflecting a strengthening industrial sector and despite a weaker BHP. At the close, the all ordinaries index firmed 3.4 points to 1200.6 and the all industrials was up six to 1910.5. The all resources added 1.4 to 662.6 and the gold index rose 7.8 to 922.8. National turnover was 56.1 million shares worth sAust99.2M, with falls outnumbering rises 258 to 245, despite the firmer trend. BHP fell 4c to 884 after reaching a high of 888 in thin trading. Elders IXL rose 12c to 460 after speculation that the group was about to bid 940 c a share for BHP. Adsteam meanwhile gained 40c to 1240 and Equiticorp Tasman 4c to 172. Bell Resources and its parent, the Bell Group, finished the day unchanged on 420 and 960 respectively. Banks led the recovery among quality industrial stocks with the National Australia Bank and Westpac each adding 10c to 574 and 478. The ANZ gained 4c to 506. Sarich Technologies continued to post strong gains
and finished 80 up at a record 1910.
