Player dies after game
PA Wellington An Inglewood rugby player died in Taranaki Base Hospital on Sunday afternoon. He was Maurice Jones. Mr Jones was admitted to the hospital’s intensivecare ward after swallowing his tongue after a tackle in a club match at Rugby Park, New Plymouth, on Saturday. A Spotswood Old Boys’ club official said Mr Jones had suffered a brain haemorrhage, but this was not confirmed by hospital staff. The club official said the injury occurred during Saturday’s game, but was not directly attributed to the match. Mr Jones had been feeling off-colour and tired for some weeks. He had earlier consulted four doctors who told him he needed a rest.
