Friend exonerated
NZPA Sydney The North Sydney rugby league half-back, Clayton Friend, was last night exonerated from a dangerous high tackle charge after appearing before the new-look N.S.W.R.L. Judiciary Committee. The Judiciary Committee, headed by Richard Conti, took 40 minutes to hear the case before reaching its verdict Friend was sent off in last Saturday’s clash with Wests at Lidcombe Oval. Mr Tony Sailer, a director of the North Sydney dub and a solicitor, representing
Friend, said In evidence that Friend had grabbed the jersey of the Wests player and dragged him to the ground. The referee, Michael Stone, said that he was five to eight metres away from the incident and believed that while the arm came towards the Wests player in an upward motion, it wasn’t “a classic swinging arm.” Mr Stone said that his view of the incident was obscured to some degree but believed that the movement of the Wests player’s head and hair upon impact made up his dismiss Friend. fjj
