Transcript to be checked

PA Wellington A transcript of proceedings in the District Court at Otahuhu last week, where a probation officer was cited by a judge for contempt of court, has been sent to the head office of the Justice Department in Wellington. The Secretary for Justice, Mr David Oughton, said yesterday that the assistant secretary in charge of the Probation Division, Mr Graham Armstrong, would read the transcript and make a recommendation on what,

if any, action should be taken. Mr Oughton said he expected to receive Mr Armstrong’s recommendation this week. The probation officer, Mr Tuterangi Sadler, was discharged on the count of contempt of court which arose when he spoke out against comments made by Judge Peter Duncan during the sentencing of a young Maori woman. Mr Sadler said the Judge had made culturally offensive comments.
